Wildlife authorities have confirmed that an 800kg saltwater crocodile, responsible for attacking a villager in Sabah’s east coast Kunak district, has been shot dead by rangers following a targeted operation.
The male crocodile was located in Sungai Ladang, Sri Kunak, on Monday, approximately a week after it was linked to a serious attack on a local resident.
The victim was reportedly collecting shellfish near the river at around 2pm on April 19 when the crocodile attacked, leaving him with severe injuries to his leg.
Following the incident, the Wildlife Department set up traps in the area after being alerted to the attack, in an effort to capture the reptile safely.
However, officials later decided to shoot the crocodile, which measured about 5.3 metres in length, due to concerns over repeated threats to villagers living along the river.
Authorities said the action was taken to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of communities residing near the riverbanks.
