The government has agreed in principle to introduce a post-maternity allowance under the Employment Insurance System (EIS) Act 2017, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced.
Speaking at the national Labour Day celebration in Bukit Jalil, Anwar said the decision reflects a progressive move to support women in the workforce, particularly those balancing career and family responsibilities.
He noted that government data shows a growing number of women aged between 25 and 29 are exiting the labour market, with maternity-related commitments identified as one of the contributing factors.
“As a progressive step forward, the government has agreed in principle to introduce a one-off allowance,” he said during his speech this morning.
Under the proposed scheme, eligible recipients are expected to receive an allowance equivalent to 80% of their current salary, providing financial support during the post-maternity period.
Anwar added that the initiative is projected to benefit around 132,000 women nationwide, marking a significant step in strengthening social protection for working mothers.
