UMNO Youth Chief Muhamad Akmal Saleh has firmly denied being aligned with any specific party leader, stressing that his loyalty lies solely with UMNO and its core principles. Speaking at the party’s 80th anniversary convention, he addressed claims labelling him as a political “pawn” of the party’s top figures.
Delivering his speech at the Dewan Merdeka in the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, Akmal openly rejected accusations linking him to UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy president Mohamad Hasan, or former youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin. He made it clear that his stance within the party is independent and rooted in personal conviction rather than allegiance to individuals.
In a spirited declaration, he introduced himself as “ABU” – short for “Aku Budak UMNO” – emphasising that his identity has always been tied to the party, past, present, and future. The statement underscored a broader message about unity and grassroots loyalty, which remains a central theme in UMNO’s ongoing political narrative.
Akmal also reminded members that the party’s 80th anniversary should not be seen as a conclusion, but rather as a renewed call to action. He warned against complacency as Malaysia approaches upcoming elections, urging members to remain vigilant, disciplined, and united in the face of political challenges.
Looking ahead, he stressed that victories in future state and general elections would be the most meaningful tribute to UMNO’s long-standing legacy. According to him, true celebration lies not in symbolic gestures, but in regaining the people’s mandate and trust.
He concluded by rallying party members, especially the youth, to strengthen their ranks and proudly identify themselves with UMNO. In his view, confidence and unity among members are essential to ensuring the party’s continued relevance and leadership in shaping the nation’s future
