Seputeh Member of Parliament Teresa Kok has called on PAS and UMNO Youth Chief Muhamad Akmal Saleh to move beyond criticism of tourism-related events and instead present constructive proposals to boost Malaysia’s tourism sector ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.
Teresa said both parties should offer viable alternatives capable of attracting international tourists and supporting the local economy, particularly after objections were raised against entertainment-driven events such as the Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026 in Bukit Bintang.
She questioned why critics who oppose such festivals have not put forward concrete ideas to strengthen the tourism industry, stressing that Malaysia must remain competitive in attracting global visitors.
In a statement on social media, she argued that most foreign tourists visit Malaysia seeking leisure, entertainment and vibrant city experiences, adding that they do not come expecting strict moral restrictions that may limit tourism appeal.
Teresa also urged critics to be realistic about economic expectations, stating that if they disagree with concerts or music festivals, they should propose alternative programmes that can generate similar tourist inflows and economic benefits.
She further pointed to past tourism performance, claiming that certain administrative approaches had previously contributed to weaker tourism outcomes in destinations such as Langkawi, and warned against repeating similar trends nationally.
The MP stressed that Malaysia should prioritise economic growth and the success of Visit Malaysia 2026, cautioning against politically driven opposition that she said could deter both investors and tourists.
Her remarks come after PAS Youth Selangor leader Sukri Omar reportedly opposed the Rain Rave Water Music Festival on the grounds that it does not reflect Malaysian identity, while Akmal had questioned the timing of the event amid government cost-cutting measures.
