Zahid Hamidi Reaffirms UMNO Has No Plan To Become Opposition In Negeri Sembilan

Date:

UMNO has not made any decision to become the opposition in Negeri Sembilan and will continue to remain part of the Unity Government, says party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said the earlier remarks made by certain UMNO state assemblymen expressing readiness to sit in the opposition were merely personal statements and do not reflect the party’s official position.

He stressed that UMNO’s central leadership has already decided that all UMNO assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan will remain within the Unity Government framework in the state.

“We have no intention of becoming the opposition. That was just a statement. UMNO at the central level has decided that our ADUNs in Negeri Sembilan will continue to be part of the Unity Government,” he said.

Zahid was speaking to reporters after attending the Kami Gen MARA assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, where he was accompanied by MARA chairman and UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

When asked about the possibility of UMNO proposing a state assemblyman as the next Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan, he said the matter had not been discussed.

On the upcoming political discussions between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and UMNO, Zahid said a joint statement would be issued later by the respective party secretaries-general.

He added that the PH and UMNO political bureaus are scheduled to hold a consultative meeting in the evening, with discussions expected to include preparations for upcoming state elections, particularly in Melaka and Johor.

Zahid also noted that all political parties are already preparing for possible elections, stressing that it will ultimately be up to the people to choose the best governing coalition when the time comes.
