24-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed After Crashing Into Road Sign In Kota Samarahan

Date:

A 24-year-old Malay man was killed after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a roadside warning sign while riding along a bend in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, yesterday afternoon.

The fatal accident occurred at about 4.07pm at the 22nd kilometre stretch of the Kota Samarahan–Sadong Jaya road. The victim, identified as Ilhan bin Mohammad from Kampung Sungai Latong, Simunjan, was a fisherman and was riding a Yamaha 135LC motorcycle alone at the time.

Police said the stretch of road is a two-way curved section, and the victim is believed to have lost control while negotiating the bend. The motorcycle then veered off to the left shoulder before crashing into a road sign, causing severe damage to the bike.

He was rushed to the Asajaya Clinic for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at about 5.50pm. His remains were later sent to the Sarawak General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Authorities also confirmed that the rider did not possess a valid driving licence at the time of the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Police said there were no CCTV cameras at the scene and no eyewitnesses have been found so far. The motorcycle has been seized and taken to the Kota Samarahan District Police Headquarters for further inspection.

Motorists have been urged to exercise extra caution, especially when navigating bends, and to reduce speed to prevent similar tragedies.
