Man Nearly Loses Home After Cheap Power Bank Explodes Inside House

Date:

A man in Samut Prakan has urged authorities to tighten checks on low-quality online products after a cheap power bank exploded inside his home, sparking a fire that damaged curtains and a door.

The incident occurred on May 3 at a house in Bang Sao Thong Subdistrict, Bang Sao Thong District, when a woman was reportedly sitting inside the home using her mobile phone with the power bank placed on a table nearby.

According to reports, the device suddenly exploded without warning. The woman initially tried to extinguish the flames using a pillow, but the fire quickly spread, forcing her to move the burning device out of the house to prevent further damage.

The fire was eventually brought under control, but not before parts of the curtains and a door were damaged. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The homeowner, a 45-year-old delivery rider, later revealed that the power bank had been purchased online for around 400 baht (approximately RM50), without confirmation of safety certification or quality standards.

He said the device had been fully charged and was not plugged in at the time of the explosion, adding that he only realised the product was low quality after the incident.

The man has since called on relevant authorities to investigate the safety of inexpensive electronic goods sold online, warning that similar incidents could lead to far more serious consequences if they occur in vehicles or unattended homes.
