Former South Korean PM Lee Hong-Koo Dies At 92

Date:

Former South Korean Prime Minister Lee Hong-koo has passed away at the age of 92, marking the end of a distinguished career that bridged academia and national leadership. His death was confirmed on Tuesday, drawing attention to his decades of service in both education and government.

Educated at prestigious institutions including Seoul National University, Emory University, and Yale University, Lee built a strong academic foundation that shaped his influence in political thought. He gained recognition as a respected political scientist while serving as a professor during the 1970s and 1980s, a period when South Korea was undergoing significant political transformation.

Lee transitioned into public service in 1988 under the administration of Roh Tae-woo, taking on the role of Minister of Unification. His career in government expanded as he later served as a presidential aide and was appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom, reflecting his growing importance in shaping South Korea’s diplomatic direction.

In 1994, during the presidency of Kim Young-sam, Lee was appointed as the country’s 28th prime minister. His tenure came at a time when South Korea was strengthening its global position, and his leadership contributed to the nation’s administrative and policy development.

Beyond his premiership, Lee continued to play a key diplomatic role, serving as ambassador to the United States from 1998 to 2000. His efforts were particularly significant in supporting South Korea’s international relations following the Asian financial crisis, underscoring his lasting impact on the country’s global engagement.

Lee is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son. His funeral is scheduled to take place on Friday, as the nation reflects on the legacy of a scholar-turned-statesman who contributed significantly to South Korea’s modern history.
