19-Year-Old Turns Himself In Over Fatal Hit-And-Run In Kuching Cycling Death

Date:

A 19-year-old male suspect has surrendered to police over a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a cyclist along Jalan Stutong last Friday. The suspect turned himself in at the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Kuching District Police Headquarters on Monday afternoon.

Kuching district police chief Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that the suspect arrived at around 12pm before being detained to assist investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The case involves allegations of dangerous driving causing death.

Police said the suspect also led officers to the scene of the incident and to a workshop located in Batu 4, where a Proton Satria believed to be involved in the crash had been kept. Authorities are now examining the vehicle as part of their ongoing investigation.

A urine test conducted on the suspect returned negative for drugs, police added. Investigators are also preparing to charge him under additional provisions, including failure to report an accident within 24 hours.

The tragic incident occurred at about 5.50am on May 1, when a 56-year-old cyclist was allegedly struck by a vehicle while riding along the road. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries.

According to information shared on social media, the victim had earlier arranged a cycling meet-up with friends and sent a final message shortly before the incident. When he failed to arrive, his friends grew concerned and later discovered him unconscious at the scene after searching for him.

CCTV footage from a nearby residence helped identify the suspected vehicle and showed the direction it fled after the crash, assisting police in tracking down the suspect.
