A 17-year-old girl sought medical treatment at a hospital in Melaka after experiencing heavy bleeding, an incident that later led to the discovery of an alleged attempt to terminate her five-month pregnancy with her boyfriend.
Melaka police chief Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said authorities were alerted on April 25 after medical staff at Hospital Melaka lodged a report at about 6.50pm. The teenager, aged 17 years and 10 months, arrived in a critical condition with severe bleeding and complications after reportedly consuming abortion pills, with part of the placenta allegedly not fully expelled.
Investigations revealed that the girl and her 18-year-old boyfriend had allegedly planned to terminate the pregnancy using medication. Police said the situation escalated into a medical emergency that ultimately exposed the incident.
Following the episode, authorities allege that the boyfriend retrieved the foetus from the girl’s residence and intended to bury it behind his house. However, the remains were reportedly hidden temporarily inside a vehicle before police intervention.
Acting on intelligence, officers from the D11 Criminal Investigation Division of the Melaka police contingent arrested the male suspect at about 11.40pm on the same day. The teenage girl was later detained after being discharged from hospital at around 3.15pm the following day.
Police confirmed that the case is being investigated under Sections 318 and 315 of the Penal Code. Investigations papers have been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office, which has instructed that both suspects be charged.
Both individuals are expected to be brought to court this Friday as the case proceeds.
