Selangor Restricts Pig Farming To Areas Far From Homes And Water Sources, Says Fahmi Fadzil

Date:

Selangor will only permit pig farming operations in designated areas located far from residential zones and key water catchment sources, in a move aimed at balancing environmental concerns with agricultural activities in the state.

Government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said the matter was discussed during today’s Cabinet meeting, where Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also briefed ministers on his recent audience with the Selangor Sultan, which was attended by Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.

Fahmi added that pig farm operators will also be required to adopt modern technology to improve waste management systems and reduce pollution risks. He stressed that stricter environmental controls will be enforced moving forward to ensure sustainable farming practices.

The issue of pig farming in Selangor has been a long-standing and sensitive topic. In February, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, called for an end to pig farming activities in the state, citing environmental concerns as well as demographic considerations.

The matter resurfaced again last month after Seri Kembangan assemblywoman Wong Siew Ki suggested implementing a modern closed-system pig farming model. Her proposal drew criticism from some quarters, with opponents arguing that it conflicted with the Sultan’s earlier directive.
