Unitree Unveils World’s First Mass-Produced Transforming Manned Mecha GD01 Priced At 3.9 Million Yuan

Date:

Chinese robotics firm Unitree Technology has officially unveiled what it claims is the world’s first mass-produced, manned transforming mech named “GD01”, with a starting price of 3.9 million yuan (about RM2.5 million). The launch marks a significant step forward in humanoid robotics and advanced mechanical engineering applications.

Inspired by science fiction films such as Alien and Avatar, the GD01 combines humanoid mobility, autonomous transformation, and high-power mechanical performance. According to the company, the mech weighs around 500 kilograms when carrying a pilot, positioning it as both a futuristic vehicle and a robotics platform.

In demonstration footage, Unitree founder Wang Xingxing personally tested the machine, showing how the operator sits inside a central cockpit while the towering mech stands far above human height. The visual contrast highlights the scale and complexity of the system, which is designed for both movement and operational versatility.

One of the standout features is its transformation capability. The GD01 can switch from an upright humanoid form to a four-legged configuration within seconds. This allows it to adapt to different terrains while maintaining stability and carrying its operator securely during movement.

The mech also demonstrates significant mechanical strength, with reports showing it is capable of delivering powerful strikes strong enough to damage brick structures during controlled tests. Unitree, however, has stressed that such demonstrations are extreme and should not be replicated by users due to safety risks.

Beyond mobility and strength, Unitree emphasised that the GD01 is not only a robotic system but also envisioned as a potential civilian transport platform. The company has urged caution, noting that humanoid robotics technology remains in an early stage of development and has limitations that users must understand.

Unitree has rapidly expanded its presence in the global robotics industry, previously gaining attention with its G1 and H1 humanoid robots, which even appeared in China’s Spring Festival Gala performances. The company recently introduced lower-cost robotic models and opened its first retail store in Beijing, signalling a shift towards broader commercialisation.

Industry data suggests Unitree is currently among the global leaders in humanoid robot production, ranking second worldwide in shipment volume. The firm also reported strong financial growth, with revenues surging more than 300 per cent year-on-year, reflecting rising demand in the robotics sector.

Analysts say the GD01 represents a bold vision for the future of robotics, but its extremely high price, safety concerns, and limited real-world applications mean widespread consumer adoption is unlikely in the near term. Nonetheless, its debut signals a new phase in the evolution of manned robotic systems.
