A hotpot dining experience in Sichuan turned into chaos after a live snake suddenly appeared inside a restaurant, sending diners scrambling for safety, with some even standing on wooden stools to avoid the reptile.
The incident occurred on May 11 at the Sanlaobiao Hotpot Commune in Bazhong, according to a video circulating online. A diner filming the scene said they were eating when a snake unexpectedly appeared beside the seating area and began slithering around.
The snake was seen moving across the floor and climbing onto nearby decorative structures, causing immediate panic among customers who quickly moved away from their tables.
In the commotion, several diners reportedly stood on chairs and stools, refusing to come down until the situation was brought under control.
Restaurant staff later arrived wearing gloves and managed to capture the snake, placing it into a sack before removing it from the premises.
A staff member told Chinese media outlet Xiaoxiang Morning Herald on May 12 that the snake was identified as a non-venomous species commonly known as a “vegetable snake”, adding that its origin inside the restaurant remains unclear.
The snake was later released into a nearby mountainous area, while the restaurant said affected customers were understanding and did not file complaints. As a goodwill gesture, the establishment also offered discounts and carried out a full cleaning and disinfection of the premises.
The unusual incident sparked strong reactions online, with netizens joking about the encounter, while others expressed shock at the unexpected “live addition” to the hotpot experience.
