Netizens Divided As T20 Woman Reveals RM11,800 Monthly Budget Leaves Little Savings

Date:

A Malaysian woman’s detailed breakdown of her monthly household expenses has reignited public debate over whether T20 income earners are genuinely living in financial comfort, especially amid ongoing discussions on fuel subsidy rationalisation.

The issue comes as the government continues to review a proposal to remove RON95 fuel subsidies for higher-income groups, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously stating that the classification framework—whether T5, T10, T15 or T20—is still under consideration.

The woman’s post, which went viral on Threads, challenges the perception that households earning above RM11,000 a month are automatically well-off. She argued that most T20 households consist of dual-income earners rather than a single high salary.

According to her breakdown, a family of three with a combined monthly income of RM11,800 could see expenses reaching around RM10,100, leaving only about RM1,000 for savings, emergencies and miscellaneous costs.

Her list included RM3,000 for housing, RM2,500 for car-related expenses, RM1,500 for food, RM1,000 for utilities and internet, RM600 for insurance, RM500 for a child’s education and RM1,000 for leisure spending.

She also highlighted regional disparities in living costs, saying that an income of RM11,819 may be comfortable in some states such as Kedah, but is far more stretched in urban centres like Kuala Lumpur.

“Same country, completely different financial realities,” she said, adding that blanket income classifications do not accurately reflect cost-of-living differences across Malaysia.

She further argued that subsidy removal may not necessarily target the truly wealthy, but instead affect those who appear financially stable on paper but are managing tight household budgets in reality.

Netizens were divided over the discussion, with some agreeing that high incomes do not always translate into comfort due to rising costs, while others pointed out that lower-income groups also face significant financial pressure and must carefully manage limited resources.
