Kuala Pilah Recreational Area Closed After Suspected Rat Urine Disease Outbreak

Date:

The Negeri Sembilan State Health Department (JKNNS) has confirmed a suspected leptospirosis, or rat urine disease, outbreak involving four cases linked to a recreational park in Kuala Pilah.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the department said all individuals developed symptoms including fever, headaches and muscle pain after visiting and carrying out water activities at the recreational area.

Of the four cases reported, one patient was admitted to hospital for further treatment while the remaining three received outpatient care. Clinical samples have also been collected from the patients for laboratory testing to confirm leptospirosis infection.

Authorities said a risk assessment conducted at the location found environmental conditions that could contribute to the spread of the disease. Recreational water areas, especially during the rainy season, are often considered high-risk zones if cleanliness is not properly maintained.

Following the findings, JKNNS announced the temporary closure of the recreational park from May 10 to May 17 to allow cleaning and maintenance works to be carried out.

The department explained that leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Leptospira bacteria, which can spread from animals to humans through contaminated water, soil or food entering the body via cuts or mucous membranes. Animals capable of carrying the bacteria include rats, cats, dogs, cattle, pigs, rabbits and horses.

JKNNS also reminded the public to avoid recreational water areas during periods of heavy rain, maintain environmental cleanliness and refrain from littering to reduce the risk of infection.

“The department will continue monitoring the leptospirosis situation closely and strengthen preparedness in implementing prevention and control measures together with relevant agencies,” the statement said.

Members of the public were also urged to seek immediate medical treatment at nearby healthcare facilities if they experience symptoms after visiting recreational areas.
