Malaysian Teen Beats Odds To Secure Rare Spot At Harvard University

Date:

An 18-year-old Malaysian student has earned a place at Harvard University, becoming the only local candidate to secure admission to the prestigious Ivy League institution this year.

Khow Jin Xen, from Puchong, was among a small group of shortlisted applicants but ultimately emerged as the sole Malaysian offer-holder after successfully receiving an acceptance from the university.

Speaking to The Star, Khow said he initially did not intend to apply for Harvard due to its highly competitive nature, but decided to take the opportunity as a personal challenge driven by the university’s global reputation.

He admitted that his application did not include an extensive list of extracurricular achievements, but instead focused on his interest in identifying and exploring social issues in Malaysia and his personal academic passions.

Khow also shared that he was surprised by the outcome, describing the moment he checked his application status as one marked by confetti on the portal — a symbol confirming his successful admission.

In addition to Harvard, he reportedly received offers from several other top universities including Yale, Princeton, Stanford, the University of California, Berkeley, Imperial College London and the University of Bath.

He will begin his studies in August, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with plans to major in physics and economics.

Khow expressed hope of using his education abroad to contribute back to Malaysia, particularly in addressing local issues through global research perspectives.

He said he looks forward to learning from world-leading academics at Harvard while exploring a broad range of subjects that could help shape his academic and professional direction in the future.
