Man Dies After Attacked By 13-Foot Great White Shark Off Western Australia

Date:

A 38-year-old man has died after being attacked by a shark near Rottnest Island in Australia.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 10am on Saturday at Horseshoe Reef, located north-west of the popular tourist island near Perth.

Authorities said the man was believed to have been bitten by a great white shark measuring approximately 13 feet (four metres) long.

Aerial footage shared by local media showed the victim being transported back to shore by boat while emergency responders rushed to assist him at the Geordie Bay jetty.

Paramedics and police officers reportedly performed CPR at the scene in an attempt to save his life.

However, police later confirmed that the man could not be revived.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in Western Australia said it received reports identifying the shark involved as a great white shark.

Officials have since urged the public to exercise extra caution in waters surrounding the area following the fatal attack.

The tragedy marks the first deadly shark attack recorded in Western Australia since March last year, when a surfer was killed at a remote beach.

Australia has recorded nearly 1,300 shark attacks since records began in 1791, with more than 260 of those incidents proving fatal.

Earlier this year, multiple shark attacks were also reported along the coast of New South Wales over a two-day period.

One of the incidents involved 12-year-old Nico Antic, who died after being attacked by a suspected bull shark in Sydney Harbour in January.
