A Malaysian radio DJ has sparked discussion online after revealing that his plate of mixed rice, commonly known as “economy rice”, cost him RM22.30.
Der Ting shared the experience on Facebook, joking that he had accidentally ordered a “mixed rice pro max” meal after being surprised by the total price at the payment counter.
“Today I had mixed rice pro max. When I paid and saw RM22.30, I was a little shocked,” he wrote in the viral post.
The radio announcer, who works at a local radio station, later told WeirdKaya that the meal was purchased from a mixed rice stall located near Seri Petaling.
His post quickly attracted attention from netizens, many of whom shared their own experiences with rising mixed rice prices across the country.
Some users pointed out that certain ingredients on his plate, particularly fish and petai, likely contributed to the higher bill.
“Because you took petai and fish,” one commenter wrote, while another joked that “stinky beans are not cheap”.
Others explained that mixed rice could still remain affordable if customers mainly chose vegetables and tofu instead of seafood or premium dishes.
One netizen advised diners to observe what the customer in front was taking before choosing their own dishes as a way to estimate pricing more accurately.
Several commenters also claimed that mixed rice stalls no longer felt “economical”, with some saying prices today can be unexpectedly expensive depending on portion size and dish selection.
The viral post has since reignited broader conversations about the rising cost of food in Malaysia, especially meals traditionally regarded as affordable everyday options.
For many Malaysians, mixed rice remains a go-to lunch choice due to its convenience and variety, but Der Ting’s RM22.30 experience has left some questioning whether “economy rice” can still live up to its name.
