A 72-year-old woman was found dead, believed to have suffocated after inhaling thick smoke during a house fire at Kampung Seri Tanjung Pengalat Kecil, early Friday morning.
In the incident at about 6am, the victim was found unconscious in the bathroom area of the house.
Papar Fire and Rescue Station acting chief Hamdani Harith said the department received an emergency call at 6.29am.
He said seven firefighters were deployed to the location, which is about four kilometres from the station.
“The operations commander reported that the fire involved a two-storey semi-permanent house, which was 90 per cent destroyed, and firefighting efforts were carried out immediately using water from a nearby hydrant,” he said in a statement.
He added that a senior woman was discovered unconscious at 7.57am, and rescue efforts were carried out immediately. However, she was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The victim’s body was handed over to police for further action.
The operation was fully concluded at 10.36am, he said.
