Sarawak is planning to establish its own space agency, according to Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the agency will serve as a central coordinating body responsible for planning, fostering collaboration, and developing local capabilities in the aerospace sector.
In addition, the Sarawak Aerospace Advisory Council (SAAC) has already been established to provide strategic direction and comprehensive guidance in advancing the state’s aerospace development in line with current global industry standards.
Abang Johari said this when winding up the debate on the motion of thanks for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s address at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly in Kuching today.
He added that Sarawak is also targeting the launch of its first nanosatellite by 2030, using CubeSat-based technology involving small satellites for real-time data and Earth observation.
He said this capability will enable Sarawak to develop its own satellites to obtain Earth imagery, geolocation data, and strategic information for planning, environmental monitoring, and resource management.
On AirBorneo, Abang Johari said the airline is being developed in stages, with Phase One focusing on consolidating public service obligation operations to provide rural air services in Sabah and Sarawak.
In Phase Two, AirBorneo will expand into domestic and regional commercial routes based on market demand and aircraft availability.
He added that for initial jet operations, AirBorneo is planning routes from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Jakarta, and Singapore by July 2026.
“Our vision is to connect Sarawak with major cities,” he said.
He added that direct air connectivity through AirBorneo will enhance mobility for residents, investors, and tourists, while also creating new opportunities for trade, investment, and tourism.
