Deliveryman Says ‘I Love You’ in a Lift — Marries American Teacher 5 Months Later

Date:

A chance encounter between a Chinese food courier and an American teacher has turned into a whirlwind romance, ending in marriage just five months later.

Liu, 27, from Shenyang in northeast China’s Liaoning province, recently shared his love story online. His wife, Hannah Harris, 30, from Alabama, moved to Shenyang last August to teach English at a kindergarten.

Their paths first crossed in November last year when Harris ordered noodles through a delivery app. While delivering the food, Liu met her in the lift and, with limited English, greeted her with the words: “Hello, I love you.” Harris laughed at the unexpected phrase, and the two exchanged contact details soon after.

What began as a language exchange quickly blossomed into a relationship. Harris taught Liu English while he helped her with Chinese. Liu shared photos of his two cats and clips of himself cooking or rollerblading, and the pair discovered they shared many interests, including food, animals, and sports.

As their bond grew, Harris often accompanied Liu on delivery runs, and they spent weekends exploring villages around Shenyang. In January, just two months after they met, Liu proposed at an underground station with a diamond ring. “Although we haven’t known each other long, I feel she is a kind person. She is the one I’ve been looking for,” he told Jimu News.

The couple tied the knot in March in Liu’s hometown, with Harris’s parents sending their blessings via video call from the US. Liu admitted he comes from a poor rural family with no house or car, but Harris told him love is not measured by material things.

Now, the newlyweds share a dog named Pudding, cook both Chinese and American dishes, and enjoy cycling together. They continue to learn each other’s language with the help of translation apps, and Harris hopes to one day publish her own book, a dream Liu fully supports.

Their story has captured hearts online, drawing over three million views on Chinese social media. “Most Chinese people know three English phrases: hello, thank you, and I love you,” one commenter wrote. “Liu chose the most powerful one at the perfect moment.”

While some netizens said marrying within five months was fast, many wished the couple happiness, praising their courage to love boldly.
