Perak PKR is expressing hope that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will defend his Tambun parliamentary seat in the next general election (GE16), saying his presence is crucial to strengthening the party’s campaign in the state.
State PKR chairman Hairul Amir Sabri said Anwar’s continued presence in Tambun would help reinforce Pakatan Harapan’s position in Perak and improve the coalition’s chances of securing both parliamentary and state seats in GE16, Berita Harian reported.
He said it is still too early to confirm where Anwar will contest, noting that the prime minister typically makes such decisions only a few months before an election.
“However, we in Perak certainly hope that Datuk Seri Anwar remains in Tambun to help us secure more victories in GE16,” he told reporters after officiating the opening of Perak PKR’s new headquarters in Meru, Ipoh, yesterday.
Hairul was responding to speculation that Anwar may contest in other constituencies such as Penang or Putrajaya in the upcoming election.
Anwar secured the Tambun seat in GE15 with a 3,736-vote majority, defeating candidates from Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional and GTA in a four-cornered contest.
On internal party matters, Hairul commented on the resignation of Tanjung Malim PKR Youth chief Haziq Azfar Ishak, saying the impact was minimal.
He explained that only a small number of members had stepped down, while the majority of the division’s leadership remained intact and operations continued as usual.
Hairul also dismissed claims of a large-scale exodus of PKR members in Perak, stressing that senior leaders and division chiefs were not involved.
He said the number of departures was very small compared to the party’s more than 100,000 members in the state.
