PM Anwar Welcomes Progress In US-Iran Peace Talks, Strait Of Hormuz Reopening

Date:

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed what he described as the “progressive trajectory” in negotiations between the United States and Iran, including developments surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

In a social media post, Anwar said he was optimistic about the ongoing diplomatic efforts after receiving positive signals from leaders across West Asia.

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump claimed that a peace agreement with Iran had been “largely negotiated”, although final details are still being discussed.

“I view these developments with earnest optimism,” Anwar said.

The prime minister also acknowledged the role played by several countries, including Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, in helping facilitate negotiations.

He further welcomed Trump’s direct involvement in pursuing a diplomatic solution and expressed hope that all parties involved would continue negotiations towards a successful conclusion.

Anwar said Malaysia remains ready to support any multilateral initiative aimed at achieving long-term peace and stability in West Asia.

He urged all sides to work towards an inclusive agreement capable of strengthening the current ceasefire, ensuring the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and addressing the security concerns of countries in the region.

Reports on the emerging framework suggest the proposed agreement could include a 60-day ceasefire extension, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the resumption of Iranian oil exports and continued negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.

In return, the United States is reportedly expected to ease restrictions on Iranian ports and provide selected sanctions waivers to allow Iran to resume oil sales internationally.
