A security guard was killed after the motorcycle he was riding reportedly lost control and crashed following a collision with a dog that suddenly crossed the road in Masjid Tanah on Monday night.
The victim, identified as 43-year-old Mohd Azhar Mohd Noor, was riding a Yamaha Y16ZR when the accident happened along Jalan Londang at around 8.35pm.
Alor Gajah district police chief Ahmad Abu Bakar said the victim was travelling from Masjid Tanah town towards Londang when the tragedy occurred.
Initial investigations revealed that the motorcycle is believed to have struck a dog that unexpectedly ran across the road, causing the rider to lose control before skidding.
“As a result of the crash, the victim suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Police inspections found that the road was a two-way single-lane route with dry road conditions and good weather at the time of the incident. Although the area was dark, streetlights were available near the scene.
Authorities also discovered the carcass of a dog by the roadside close to where the crash happened.
The motorcycle has since been taken to the Alor Gajah Traffic Police Station and will be sent to PUSPAKOM for further inspection.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist investigations by contacting the investigating officer, Inspector Loh Gia Xao.
The tragedy once again highlights the dangers faced by motorcyclists on poorly lit roads, especially when animals suddenly appear in traffic routes at night.
