A Toyota Alphard driver’s attempt to evade enforcement officers by hiding his vehicle beside a building ended in failure after he was caught by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) during an operation along the Sultanah Bahiyah Highway on Monday.
Kedah JPJ director Stien Van Lutam said the incident happened at around 4pm when officers from JPJ Alor Setar detected the suspicious vehicle.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, allegedly tried to flee for more than one kilometre before he was finally cornered behind a bank building along the highway.
Authorities later discovered that the luxury multi-purpose vehicle had accumulated more than 20 unpaid Automated Enforcement System (AES) summonses amounting to over RM6,000.
Further checks also revealed that the vehicle did not possess valid road tax or insurance coverage.
According to Stien, the driver claimed he was “shocked” because the summonses had only appeared in the system this year and pleaded for more time to settle the fines.
However, JPJ stressed that enforcement action would still be taken against any vehicle owner who failed to comply with road regulations.
The Toyota Alphard was eventually seized for further action.
The incident has once again highlighted ongoing issues involving unpaid traffic summonses and road users attempting to avoid enforcement operations despite mounting violations.
