A man who was shot dead by armed police following a reported stand-off in Bedford has been identified as 41-year-old Angelo Russo.
The incident unfolded at a property on Aylesbury Road, Bedfordshire, after officers were called to reports of vehicle damage at around 10.40pm on 11 May 2026. The situation escalated when police encountered a man who had allegedly barricaded himself inside a semi-detached house and began issuing threats.
According to authorities, armed officers and police negotiators were deployed to the scene and engaged in an overnight attempt to defuse the situation. The stand-off reportedly continued into the following morning as officers maintained containment around the property.
Police stated that at approximately 9.30am, the man was seen at a window presenting what appeared to be a pistol-type weapon towards officers. He was subsequently shot at the scene and later pronounced dead around an hour afterwards. His next of kin have been informed.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed it has launched an investigation into the incident. Officials said body-worn and other footage indicates the man was seen waving what appeared to be a firearm shortly before the shooting occurred.
Investigators also revealed that officers involved are currently being treated as witnesses while enquiries continue. The watchdog noted that the weapon recovered has been assessed by specialists and later identified as an air pistol.
Authorities further stated that the individual had been experiencing mental health difficulties prior to the incident. Such cases often place significant pressure on both emergency responders and investigative bodies, particularly when armed policing is involved.
IOPC director Emily Barry said investigators are reviewing extensive evidence, including hours of footage, as part of ongoing inquiries, adding that findings will be submitted for inquest proceedings in due course.
