A powerful gas explosion at an apartment complex in Dallas on Thursday left three people dead and at least five others injured, triggering a major emergency response and large-scale search and rescue operations.
Dallas Fire & Rescue (DFR) said it was first alerted to a gas leak at a building on 9th Street shortly before 1pm local time. While firefighters were en route, the situation escalated into a sudden explosion, which rapidly developed into a major structural fire.
Authorities confirmed that the incident was upgraded to a five-alarm response, with around 120 firefighters deployed to bring the blaze under control. The scale of the fire prompted the evacuation of nearby residents as emergency crews combed through the debris of the collapsed two-storey building.
Officials later said the operation shifted from rescue to recovery as it became increasingly likely that anyone still trapped inside the structure had not survived. The intensity of the blast caused significant structural damage, complicating search efforts.
DFR confirmed that three people were killed in the explosion, including a child and two women. At least five others were injured, with three transported to hospital and two others seeking treatment for minor injuries.
Emergency teams said 12 residents have been accounted for so far, while reports indicate that 23 people were believed to be living in the building at the time of the explosion. Search operations are continuing as crews carefully sift through the wreckage.
General officials described the scene as “enormous,” highlighting the severity of the blast and the extensive damage left behind. Firefighters have vowed to continue recovery and search efforts until the entire site has been fully cleared.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion. Preliminary reports suggest that a construction crew, not affiliated with the gas company Atmos Energy, may have struck a natural gas pipeline prior to the blast, though this has yet to be confirmed.
The incident has prompted an outpouring of condolences from local leaders, including the city mayor, who said he is closely monitoring developments and expressed sympathy for the victims and their families as investigations continue.
