Singapore Open: Ee Wei’s Run Cut Short By Knee Injury

Date:

Malaysia’s mixed doubles player Toh Ee Wei was left in tears after being forced to withdraw from the Singapore Open due to a left knee injury.

The incident occurred during the quarter-finals at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, where she and her partner Chen Tang Jie were leading India’s Dhruv Kapila–Tanisha Crasto 18-16 in the opening game when she was unable to continue.

At 15-15, play was briefly halted as Ee Wei was seen wrapping her own knee, with World Badminton Federation (BWF) rules preventing medical treatment during active play.

Despite the pain, she bravely continued and helped the pair take an 18-16 lead before eventually making the heartbreaking decision to retire from the match.

She was later seen leaving the court in a wheelchair with tears streaming down her face.

Chen Tang Jie said Ee Wei had wanted to continue playing but the pain worsened with every step she took on court.

He added that the most important priority now is her recovery rather than results, expressing hope that she will regain full fitness soon.

Tang Jie also described his partner as a fighter who would normally refuse to withdraw unless the injury was serious, highlighting her determination and resilience on court.
