Mass Arrests Following Celebrations That Turned Violent

Date:

More than 400 people were arrested after clashes broke out between football supporters and police following a major European club’s Champions League final victory over Arsenal.

Authorities said thousands of officers were deployed to control widespread unrest that disrupted transport services, including buses and trains, in the capital.

In a broader public safety context, football-related celebrations in France have increasingly raised concerns about crowd control and post-match violence, particularly during high-profile finals.

Fireworks and flares were set off in several areas, while police confirmed that multiple officers were injured during the disturbances. Tear gas was also used to disperse large crowds in the city centre.

Footage circulating online showed burning electric bikes, damaged shopfronts and widespread vandalism, with supporters gathering in large numbers after the final whistle.

Police reported damage to several vehicles, businesses and public infrastructure, including a bus shelter, amid the chaos.

The country’s Interior Ministry said 416 individuals were arrested in total, with 280 detained in the capital alone during overnight operations.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the unrest as “absolutely unacceptable”, as authorities moved to restore order.

Separately, far-right political figure Marine Le Pen criticised the violence on social media, questioning recurring disorder linked to football celebrations.

Officials confirmed that seven police officers were injured during the incidents, while investigations into the extent of property damage are ongoing.

Despite the unrest, victory celebrations are still scheduled to continue with a planned parade and official reception involving state leaders.

The latest disturbances follow similar incidents in previous years, when football celebrations in the country also escalated into deadly clashes.
