Date:

The 19-year-old brother of a BMW driver who was killed in a devastating multi-vehicle crash near Simpang Renggam has been remanded for two days to assist police investigations.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno on Tuesday to facilitate investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

The suspect was brought to the Batu Pahat Magistrate’s Court at around 10.30am, less than 24 hours after the tragedy that claimed five lives along Kilometre 27 of the Renggam–Simpang Renggam Road near Simpang Renggam Prison.

Earlier reports stated that the BMW involved in the crash was driven by 22-year-old Goh Yi Sheng, who was allegedly travelling alongside his younger brother, who was driving a Mercedes-Benz, from Renggam towards Simpang Renggam.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 1.19pm when the BMW reportedly lost control, veered off course and crashed into four oncoming vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.

The vehicles involved included a Perodua Alza, Toyota Vios, Proton Wira 1.5 and a Mercedes-Benz.

Four occupants of the Toyota Vios were killed at the scene after suffering severe injuries. They were identified as Mohd Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36, Nor Azlina Abd Latif, 33, Semek Mat Soh, 75, and 10-year-old Nur Airish Syifa Sidek.

Yi Sheng also succumbed to serious chest injuries while being transported to hospital.

Eight other victims sustained injuries in the crash and were taken to Hospital Enche Besar Hajjah Khalsom (HEBHK) in Kluang for treatment.

The tragedy has sparked widespread public concern, with police continuing their investigation into the circumstances leading up to one of Johor’s deadliest road accidents this year.
