Labourer Claims Trial Over Parang Attack On Friend

Date:

A 41-year-old labourer has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of causing grievous hurt to his friend with a parang in an incident last month.

J. Tanabalan entered the plea after the charge was read before Judge Ooi Sheow Yean.

In a broader context, cases involving weapons such as machetes continue to highlight concerns over violent disputes escalating into serious criminal offences within residential communities.

According to the charge, Tanabalan is accused of using a 70cm parang to cause grievous hurt to Noor Aziman Mohd Sukri, 29, in an incident that could have led to death.

The alleged offence took place at Block C of the Ampang Jajar Flats around 4am on May 25.

He was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years, along with a fine or whipping upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Lim Zhan Yi did not offer bail but requested additional conditions should the court allow release, including a restriction on contacting the victim and witnesses.

The accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for bail, saying he needed to support his three school-going children and that his wife works in a factory.

The court allowed bail at RM10,000 with one surety and fixed July 2 for mention, appointment of counsel, and submission of the victim’s medical report.

It was also disclosed that the victim suffered serious injuries, including fractures to both arms, open wounds, and head injuries that may result in permanent disability.

The motive for the alleged attack has yet to be established in court proceedings.
