Two people believed to be a father and son were killed after becoming trapped inside a two-storey house that caught fire near Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Jembal here early today.
The victims, identified as a man and a boy, were unable to escape the blaze, while a woman managed to get out of the house safely.
Kuala Nerus Fire and Rescue Station chief Azmi Omar said an emergency call was received at 2.49am, with firefighters reaching the scene just nine minutes later.
“Upon arrival at 2.58am, firefighters found the semi-permanent two-storey house, measuring about 40 by 50 feet, approximately 70 per cent engulfed in flames.
“Initial information indicated that a man and a boy were trapped inside, while a woman had managed to escape,” he said in a statement.
Firefighters from the Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu stations immediately launched firefighting and rescue operations to contain the blaze and search for the trapped victims.
The operation involved 16 personnel, two fire engines and a water tanker. Firefighters succeeded in bringing the fire under control at about 4.14am.
Search and rescue efforts continued after the flames were contained as firefighters worked to locate the victims and ensure the affected premises were safe.
The circumstances surrounding the fire and the identities of the two victims have yet to be confirmed, with further details expected from the authorities.
