Kim Jong Un Joins Xi and Putin in Beijing Parade, Cementing China’s Global Diplomatic Clout

Date:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is set to attend a military parade in central Beijing alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking a major diplomatic moment for China. The parade, scheduled for September 3 to commemorate 80 years since Japan’s surrender in World War Two, has become more than just a historic military display—it is a carefully orchestrated demonstration of China’s growing influence on the global stage.

Xi Jinping has been working to project Beijing not only as the world’s second-largest economy but also as a key diplomatic player. The surprise announcement of Kim’s attendance underscores Xi’s role as a mediator with potential leverage over both Kim and Putin. For Kim, the visit offers legitimacy and reinforces his strategic ties with China, which provides nearly 90% of North Korea’s food imports.

The timing is especially significant for Xi as he positions himself ahead of potential high-stakes discussions with former US President Donald Trump, who has expressed interest in meeting Kim again. While Trump’s previous diplomacy with Pyongyang produced no breakthroughs, Xi’s engagement with both leaders could give him unique insight and leverage in upcoming negotiations.

China has maintained a publicly neutral stance on the war in Ukraine, though the West has accused Beijing of indirectly supporting Moscow. Kim’s visit signals that North Korea remains within China’s sphere of influence, despite growing Pyongyang-Moscow ties.

The parade will also feature leaders from other countries, including Indonesia and Iran, providing an opportunity for Kim to gain international recognition. For Xi, hosting Kim and Putin together strengthens China’s diplomatic hand as it continues trade discussions with the US and considers potential roles in peace efforts regarding Ukraine.
