Five people were injured in a stabbing incident at New York’s Penn Station on Sunday, according to the city fire department.
Authorities said all victims were taken to hospital, with injuries ranging from serious to minor. The suspect has since been detained as investigations continue.
The New York Fire Department confirmed that the victims were all civilians, including one person in serious condition, two with moderate injuries and two with minor wounds.
Officials said the circumstances surrounding the stabbing remain unclear at this stage, with emergency operations ongoing at the scene.
Images from the location showed police and emergency responders surrounding the busy transport hub, with medical equipment scattered near the site of the incident.
The attack occurred at one of the United States’ busiest rail and subway stations, just days before major sporting events are set to take place in New York.
Security has been tightened across the city ahead of the NBA Finals games and upcoming international football matches expected to draw large crowds.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid the Penn Station area due to road closures, transport disruptions and ongoing emergency response activity.
