A man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of veteran actor James Handy, who was found seriously injured outside a home in Los Angeles earlier this week.
Police said the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, was arrested after officers discovered the 81-year-old actor with stab wounds to the chest. Handy was later pronounced dead at hospital.
Gledhill did not appear in court for his arraignment, with his lawyer stating that he was unable to assist in his own defence. The court has since ordered a mental health evaluation to determine his fitness for trial.
Authorities said Gledhill allegedly told police he was responsible for the attack after officers responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbing confession made at the scene.
Prosecutors said Handy deserved to spend his later years in peace, adding that those responsible for his death must be held fully accountable under the law.
Bail for the accused has been set at US$2 million, and he faces a potential sentence ranging from 26 years to life imprisonment if convicted.
Handy, known for roles in films such as Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick, had a long career in television and film spanning decades, earning respect among colleagues and friends in the industry.
