Northern Ireland has been hit by a wave of violence after riots broke out following a stabbing incident, with mobs setting fire to homes and a public bus in several areas.
The unrest began in Belfast before spreading to Portadown, where a police patrol vehicle was also torched as the situation escalated.
According to BBC News, the riots erupted shortly after a man was formally charged in court with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing case.
The suspect is reported to be a Sudanese national who entered the United Kingdom in 2023 and was granted refugee protection status.
In the original stabbing incident on Monday, the victim suffered severe injuries including wounds to the eye, face, and back.
Northern Ireland leaders have strongly condemned the violence, calling the actions of rioters completely unacceptable and damaging to public safety.
The First Minister described the unrest as “utter thuggery,” while the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland stressed that there is no justification for violence against civilians or property.
Police have since tightened security measures and urged the public to remain calm as efforts continue to prevent the riots from spreading further.
