RM1 Million Love Scam Syndicate Busted — Suspect Leaps From Balcony in Desperation

Date:

A suspected African man involved in a ‘love scam’ syndicate jumped from the third floor in a desperate attempt to escape during a police raid at noon yesterday, leaving him with broken ribs.

The 1.50pm raid at a residential area in Nilai led to the arrest of the injured suspect along with two other men and two foreign women at what police described as their ‘operations base’.

Nilai District Police Chief, Superintendent Abdul Malik Hasim, said the syndicate mainly targeted both local and foreign women, luring them into online romance traps through social media.

“A police team from the Nilai District Headquarters raided the premises and arrested three foreign men aged between 30s and 40s. Two foreign women in their 30s were also detained, along with equipment believed to be used for fraudulent activities,” he said today.

During the raid, one of the suspects tried to flee by leaping from the third floor but ended up with broken ribs.

According to Abdul Malik, the syndicate operated primarily via fake profiles on Facebook, actively scamming victims since August 2023. Police believe the group raked in profits amounting to RM1 million through their activities.

Items seized included four laptops of various brands, 15 mobile phones, two tablets, 11 debit cards from different banks, two WiFi modems, two pendrives, and a hard disk.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 and Section 120B of the Penal Code.

“All suspects have been remanded for four days starting today until September 1 by the Seremban Magistrate’s Court,” he added.
