A woman and her four-year-old son suffered serious injuries after they were struck by a car while attempting to cross a road near Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA) on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred at approximately 7.30pm along Jalan Tanah Putih, close to the hospital.
The 43-year-old woman sustained head injuries, injuries to her right arm and internal bleeding, while her son suffered internal bleeding and a concussion as a result of the collision.
Both victims were rushed to the Red Zone of Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan for emergency treatment due to the severity of their injuries.
Kuantan District Police Chief ACP Ashari Abu Samah said preliminary investigations found that the accident involved a Perodua Axia driven by a 28-year-old man travelling from Tanjung Lumpur towards Gambang.
According to police, the driver was travelling in the right lane when the woman and child allegedly crossed the road unexpectedly from the Kuantan Esplanade area towards HTAA.
“The driver is believed to have been unable to avoid the pedestrians after they suddenly entered the roadway,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
As a result of the impact, both victims suffered serious injuries before being transported to the nearby hospital for treatment.
Initial investigations indicate that the accident may have been caused by the pedestrians failing to use the pedestrian overpass provided for crossing the road. Road safety authorities frequently remind members of the public to use designated crossing facilities to reduce the risk of serious accidents, particularly on busy roads.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
