PAS To Decide On Johor Poll Strategy And PN Future At Key Central Meeting At Crucial Wednesday Meeting

Date:

PAS is expected to make several major decisions regarding the party’s future direction and the status of component parties within Perikatan Nasional (PN) during a crucial central committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said the meeting in Kuala Lumpur would focus on preparations for the upcoming Johor state election as well as the position of other parties within the coalition.

“We have not made any decision yet regarding the Johor state election. We have received an initial briefing from PAS Johor, but a detailed presentation has yet to be made,” he told reporters after a religious lecture at Rusila Mosque on Friday.

“Therefore, the matter will be discussed during Wednesday’s meeting,” he added.

Abdul Hadi was responding to questions on whether PAS would contest the Johor state election independently or continue working with its coalition partners.

In a significant statement, the PAS leader also claimed that the party had already severed ties with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, commonly known as Bersatu.

“God willing, wait for the meeting on Wednesday. We have already cut ties with Bersatu. The relationship has long been severed,” he said.

According to Abdul Hadi, PAS decided to distance itself from Bersatu following disagreements over the coalition’s previous management structure and constitutional framework, which he claimed granted excessive powers to the coalition chairman, including authority over the use of election logos.

“They structured the constitution in a way that tied us down. That is why we wanted to free ourselves from those constraints, and PAS acted accordingly,” he said.

When asked about the future of other PN component parties, including Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia and Parti Jaringan India Malaysia, Abdul Hadi said decisions would be determined based on the coalition’s constitutional provisions and the majority position of member parties.

“Bersatu remains a member, but we have already severed relations with them. There are also other component parties, and it is up to them whether they choose to support us or not,” he said.

“According to the constitution, decisions must be made based on the majority of member parties.”

Abdul Hadi also rejected claims by Bersatu leaders that the party had never blocked the entry of new political groups into PN.

He alleged that PAS had previously proposed the inclusion of several parties and organisations but faced opposition from Bersatu.

“That is not true. We submitted the names and agreed to their participation, but Bersatu disagreed,” he said.

Among the groups he claimed were prevented from joining the coalition were Parti Pejuang Tanah Air, Berjasa and even Malaysian Indian Congress.

Meanwhile, Abdul Hadi confirmed he would attend the RESET Malaysia Convention in Tanah Merah, Kelantan, led by former Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin.

He said announcements and leadership-related decisions expected during the event could also have implications for the future direction of the four states currently governed by Perikatan Nasional.

Political observers are now closely watching Wednesday’s PAS meeting, which could potentially reshape alliances within the opposition bloc ahead of the Johor state election and future national political developments.
