A 26-year-old local man has been arrested in Meradong for suspected involvement in drug abuse activities during an anti-drug operation in the district.
Meradong District Police Chief DSP Tansli Mering said the suspect was detained at about 9.30am on Saturday under Ops Tapis Khas conducted by the IPD Meradong Task Force.
He said the man was taken to the district police headquarters for urine screening following the arrest.
Subsequent tests confirmed that the suspect tested positive for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine.
Tansli said the individual was then detained for further investigation and follow-up action.
He added that police checks also revealed the suspect has a prior criminal record related to drug offences.
The case is being investigated under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted, the suspect faces a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
The case is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act, which carries a penalty of a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years upon conviction.
Police stressed that drug-related offences are taken seriously and that enforcement efforts will continue without compromise.
The public has been urged to assist authorities by providing information on drug-related activities in Meradong to the Bintangor Police Station hotline.
