For some, the perfect holiday is lounging by the pool with a cocktail in hand. For others, it’s a phone-free hiking adventure under the stars. Now, experts have devised a formula for the ultimate getaway—ideal for those scrambling to book a last-minute summer escape.
Researchers from easyJet Holidays surveyed 2,000 people about their dream holiday, and wellbeing expert Dr Andy Cope distilled the results into a “recipe” for holiday happiness. According to Dr Cope, the perfect getaway includes 6.1 hours of sleep, 4.8 hours of sunshine, and 2.2 hours of physical activity—even a casual swim in the hotel pool counts. He also recommends spending 3.9 hours away from screens each day to truly unwind.
The key, he said, is to be present and relaxed, without stressing over how much time is spent with family or friends. Dr Cope suggests a 70:30 split—70% of the holiday with loved ones, 30% for yourself. Other essentials include three litres of water daily and a sweet treat to indulge in.
Rather than ticking off sights, travellers should aim for 25°C warmth, a light breeze, and zero emails. While it takes most people two days on average to fully switch off from work, the top activities that bring Brits joy include beach visits, pool swimming, exploring cultural landmarks, trying local cuisine, reading, and catching a sunrise.
Stuart Wright, Customer Director at easyJet Holidays, summed it up: “The secret to a happy holiday lies in simplicity, inspiration, and ease. Focus on what matters—discovering new places, making memories with loved ones, and enjoying a well-earned break from everyday life.”
Dr Cope’s formula for the perfect holiday, in short: sleep + sunshine + exercise, multiplied by time with family, minus excessive phone use. Put simply: put down your phone and soak up every moment.
