Trump Says Iran Agreement To Be Finalised Soon, Key Waterway To Reopen

Date:

A proposed agreement between the United States and Iran is expected to be finalised as early as Sunday, with former US President Donald Trump claiming that the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened immediately once the deal is signed, according to Anadolu Ajansi.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the agreement was scheduled for signature on Sunday and insisted that the strategic waterway “will be opened to all” once it is formalised.

Earlier, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has been involved in mediation efforts linked to regional peace talks, said the agreement could potentially be concluded within the next 24 hours.

He added that Pakistan was preparing for an electronic signing of the peace deal, followed by technical-level discussions in the following week.

Trump further described the anticipated agreement as a safeguard against nuclear weapons development, claiming Iran had no intention of pursuing nuclear arms through any means, including purchase or development.

He also said US relations with Iran were currently at their strongest compared to previous administrations, while criticising earlier US policy and stressing that no funds would be transferred to Tehran.

According to Trump, the United States would also take control of remaining nuclear material in Iran and destroy it, either locally or in the US, at an appropriate time when conditions stabilise.

He added that US forces, including B-2 bomber crews, would be involved in reducing enrichment levels and eliminating nuclear-related materials.

However, Iranian officials have rejected claims that any signing will take place on Sunday, stating that the timeline remains uncertain and no delegation has been scheduled for meetings in Geneva or elsewhere in the coming days.

The conflicting statements come amid ongoing tensions in the region, following earlier hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have significantly impacted security in the Strait of Hormuz and global energy routes.
