The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning involving Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and 10 states, with the alert remaining in effect until 6pm today.
In a statement, METMalaysia said the warning covers Kedah, Penang, Terengganu, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Sarawak, Sabah, Perak and Selangor.
Affected areas in Kedah include Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu, while in Penang the warning covers Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Tengah and Seberang Perai Selatan.
The same weather alert has also been issued for Dungun and Kemaman in Terengganu, as well as Cameron Highlands, Jerantut, Maran, Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang.
In Negeri Sembilan, the affected districts are Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah and Rembau, while in Johor, the warning covers Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi.
Meanwhile, areas forecast to be affected in Sarawak include Julau, Selangau, Matu, Tatau, Telang Usan and Lawas. In Sabah, the warning involves Sipitang, Tenom, Beaufort, Keningau, Tambunan, the West Coast region, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Telupid, Kinabatangan and Sandakan.
METMalaysia said the warning is issued when weather conditions indicate thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20 millimetres per hour that are occurring or expected to persist for more than one hour.
The department reminded the public that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts and remain valid for a period not exceeding six hours from the time of issuance.
