A dispute over smoking inside a restaurant in eastern China has sparked widespread online discussion after a man with a history of heart disease died shortly after confronting customers who allegedly attempted to smoke indoors.
The incident occurred at a popular restaurant in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, where a male relative of the owner reportedly became involved in an argument with several diners who wanted to smoke inside the premises.
According to Chinese media reports, the confrontation began on June 8 when five customers dining at the restaurant allegedly attempted to smoke indoors despite being told that smoking was not allowed.
After being refused, the customers and the restaurant owner’s relative, identified as Shuai, became involved in a heated verbal dispute that later escalated into pushing and shoving. Other people at the scene eventually intervened and separated both parties.
Authorities said the five customers left the restaurant at approximately 9.59pm, while Shuai remained outside the premises with family members.
Just two minutes later, at around 10.01pm, Shuai was reportedly smoking outside the restaurant when he suddenly collapsed.
He was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead despite emergency treatment.
Hospital examinations concluded that the 54-year-old died from sudden cardiac death.
Reports revealed that Shuai had a history of heart disease and had previously undergone heart bypass surgery.
The case attracted widespread attention online after claims circulated on social media alleging that Shuai had been assaulted during the confrontation and that the altercation may have contributed to his death.
Following the incident, local authorities launched an investigation and brought the five diners involved in the dispute to a police station for questioning.
The restaurant has since temporarily suspended operations.
The incident has ignited heated debate on Chinese social media, with many users expressing sympathy for the deceased and criticising those who attempted to smoke inside the restaurant.
Others questioned whether the confrontation and emotional stress may have indirectly contributed to the fatal medical episode.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
