A masked gang carried out a dramatic ram raid on a Nationwide building society branch in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, using a digger to rip a cash machine from the premises in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The incident took place shortly after 3.15am, when several vehicles arrived at the scene before a telehandler was driven directly into the building and repeatedly used to smash through the structure.
CCTV footage captured the heavy machinery tearing the ATM free before the suspects loaded it into a waiting vehicle and fled the scene at speed.
Police said multiple vehicles were involved in the coordinated theft, which is believed to have been carefully planned and executed within minutes.
A second car was also seen leaving the area, while officers confirmed that a bakery van spotted nearby during the incident was not connected to the crime.
Authorities believe the digger used in the raid had itself been stolen prior to the attack, adding to the scale of the organised operation.
Cambridgeshire Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses, CCTV footage, or dashcam evidence that could help identify those responsible.
Nationwide Building Society confirmed the branch will reopen in the coming days and that the damaged ATM will be replaced as soon as possible, while advising customers to use nearby branches in the meantime.
The case adds to a growing number of high-impact ATM ram raids across the UK, where heavy machinery is increasingly being used in rapid, targeted cash thefts.
