A public auction of 14 items seized from Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos’s home, which was scheduled for Monday, has been called off after he settled an outstanding judgment debt linked to a defamation case involving Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
According to Kok’s lawyer, SN Nair, Jamal issued a banker’s cheque amounting to RM66,600 to Kok at around 5pm yesterday to resolve the remaining sum owed under the court judgment.
He said the payment was made in full settlement of the debt arising from a defamation suit, and the auction will only be formally cancelled once the cheque is cleared.
“In view of the payment received, the public auction previously scheduled for June 22 has been called off and postponed pending clearance of the banker’s cheque,” he said.
Nair added that once the cheque is successfully cleared, the judgment debt will be considered fully settled and enforcement proceedings, including the auction, will be terminated.
Earlier, the High Court had allowed enforcement action to proceed after dismissing interpleader applications filed by Jamal’s son and brother-in-law, who had claimed ownership of the seized items.
The case originated from a 2022 High Court ruling which ordered Jamal to pay more than RM300,000 in damages and costs after he was found liable for defaming Kok.
Although RM300,000 had been placed in a stakeholder’s account pending appeal, an outstanding balance of RM66,061.65 for costs and interest remained unpaid, leading Kok to initiate seizure proceedings to recover the amount.
