Malaysia-Russia Energy Ties Strengthen With Long-Term Deal

Date:

Malaysia has received assurances of long-term cooperation from Russia that could help secure the country’s supply of petrol, gas and diesel for at least the next two decades, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said Russian President Vladimir Putin had given the commitment during recent engagements between the two nations, reflecting the strengthening of bilateral relations built on mutual trust and strategic interests. He noted that such partnerships are increasingly important as global energy security continues to face uncertainty.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Setia Fontaines Industrial Park in Bandar Setia Fontaines, Anwar said Malaysia’s diplomatic approach remains centred on maintaining balanced relations with all global powers. In today’s interconnected world, he added, countries must adopt pragmatic policies to safeguard national economic resilience.

He further explained that Malaysia’s foreign policy, which prioritises neutrality and engagement with multiple partners, has enabled the country to attract investment and secure cooperation from major international players. This approach, he said, continues to place Malaysia in a favourable position within the global economic landscape.

Anwar also said the discussions with Putin had produced understanding on long-term arrangements involving energy supplies, ensuring stability in oil, gas and diesel resources for Malaysia for at least 20 years. He added that such outcomes were made possible through strong diplomatic ties and mutual respect between both countries.

In addition, the Prime Minister highlighted that Malaysia’s recent engagements with Russia and Turkmenistan had also yielded positive developments, including agreements related to energy exploration. He said Turkmenistan had agreed to grant Malaysia access to major gas reserves, which are among the largest in the world, through PETRONAS.

Anwar emphasised that the government’s diplomatic efforts are not driven by personal or political interests but are aimed at strengthening national development and safeguarding the welfare of the people.
