Man Jailed After Storing Sacks Of Human Waste Outside Home In Nigeria

Date:

A man in northern Nigeria has been sentenced to two weeks in prison after neighbours complained that he was storing sacks of human waste outside his home, causing a foul smell and discomfort in the residential area.

Mohammed Saidu was brought before a court in Kano city after residents lodged complaints with environmental authorities over the strong odour coming from his property.

Magistrate Halima Wali also imposed a fine of 100,000 naira (about RM304) on the accused.

The court described his actions as highly irresponsible and a threat to public health and community wellbeing.

Saidu, who works as a septic tank cleaner, reportedly sold the human waste to farmers for use as fertiliser.

Authorities said nearly 50 sacks of waste were discovered at the location when the first complaint was received.

Saidu pleaded guilty to the charge of endangering public health.

Before sentencing, the magistrate reportedly visited the site to personally inspect the piles of waste stored outside the premises.
