A 19-year-old local man has been arrested after allegedly recording a woman inside a restaurant toilet in Bekenu on Saturday.
Miri Police Chief Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the suspect, who works as a lorry attendant, was detained shortly after the incident following a report lodged by the victim.
According to police, the incident occurred at about 10am when the suspect allegedly used a mobile phone to record the woman while she was inside the toilet.
The victim reportedly noticed the act and immediately lodged a police report at the Bekenu police station.
“Following the report, a police team launched an operation and arrested the suspect at approximately 11.30am on the same day,” Mohd Farhan said in a statement.
Police also seized a mobile phone believed to have been used during the incident as part of the investigation.
Background checks on the suspect revealed that he has no previous criminal record.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 377D of the Penal Code for gross indecency.
If convicted, the offence carries a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment.
Police said investigations into the case are ongoing.
