Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) Melaka has seized a total of 60 vehicles driven by foreign nationals during the Ops Pemandu Warga Asing (Ops PeWA) conducted statewide over a two-week period starting June 16.
Melaka JPJ director Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop said a total of 243 vehicles were inspected throughout the operation, with 60 subsequently impounded under various offences in accordance with the Road Transport Act (1987).
She added that 196 notices were also issued following further inspections involving the foreign drivers.
Of the 60 vehicles seized, 47 were motorcycles, nine were cars, two were goods transport vehicles, and another two fell under other categories.
Siti Zarina said the main offences detected included driving without a valid licence, expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), and lack of insurance coverage.
She revealed that most of the seized motorcycles were purchased by foreign drivers without proper ownership transfer procedures, with prices ranging between RM800 and RM1,500.
Some motorcycles were also reportedly lent by employers for work purposes, while others were older units bought in cash transactions.
The enforcement involved drivers of various nationalities, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Rohingya, Indonesia, Myanmar, and others.
She stressed that the operation was not targeted at any specific group but aimed at ensuring all road users comply with traffic laws regardless of nationality.
Siti Zarina also reminded vehicle owners to take responsibility for their vehicles, warning that allowing unlicensed individuals to use them is an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987.
